A note from Beth

Nobody is a bad writer; plenty of people have never been shown how to revise.

I read your work the way an editor reads a colleague's — seriously. We find the idea worth keeping, cut what buries it, and rebuild around it. The grade follows, but the real prize is sounding like yourself on paper.

Beth’s story

Beth edited her college paper and spent two years as a writing-center tutor, where she learned that most 'bad writers' are just writers nobody ever read carefully. She has coached students from first-generation college applicants polishing personal statements to AP Lang students chasing 5s, and she keeps a folder of before-and-after drafts she calls the glow-up archive.

She quoted my own sentence back to me and asked what it was doing. Nobody ever read my writing that closely. My AP Lang essays went from 4s to 8s on the rubric.

My son's college essay went through four drafts with Beth. It still sounds like him — just the best version of him. He got into his reach school.

Reverse outlining changed how I write everything. I can now see when my paragraph is doing two jobs and split it before the teacher marks it.
